Getting To Know Your Island

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of three main islands St. Croix, St.Thomas, St. John and 50
smaller islets and cays. The island has a rich history just like many other countries in the Caribbean. What mainly stood out to me and what could be a good topic for my research project is that the islands inhabitants were enslaved and sold off as slaves as well. Although, this time it wasn't conquered by just country it was multiple such as Spain, Great Britain, The Netherlands, France, and Denmark-Norway. The main people that took control were the Danish West India company and they held the island from 1754 until 1916 when the US got control over the country by signing the Treaty of Danish West Indies. The citizens of the island were granted American citizenship and another good topic is the diversity on the island as well. The island was conquered by five different countries throughout history and as of 2010 the population of the Island was 106,405. Seventy-Six were of African descent, fifteen percent were European and 1.4 percent were of asian descent. I believe that this is a good topic as well because the island is diverse and there are multiple cultures you can study and learn about as well. I also like how on the different Islands the common language switches as well. Such as how on St.Croix English is the most common but Spanish is spoken in small populations there is also Virgin Islands English Creole and the Virgin Islands Creole is not the same as other languages on the island it is slightly different. I believe this islands offers multiple research topics from history to culture on the island as well.

  1. I like how you listed off things that can go into your research, it shoes that you are coming up with a list of topics in your head. You gave us a lot of the islands historical aspects, and some political aspects. I was interested in finding out more on the culture of the island since you stated it is a very diverse region and how this affects the residents day to day lifestyles. I would also really like to hear more on how things changed for the inhabitants after Americans gained control from the Danish west India company. The only recommendation I have is to make sure and site the author or the website in your blog post to give them credit as well, I see you cited on the bottom of the post it's good to give credit in your post as well. Other than that I think you're off to a great start and i'm looking forward to reading more.
