History Of Puerto Rico

HISTORY OF PUERTO RICO

Puerto Rico has always had a very interesting historical background when it came to the Modern Era.

Christopher Columbus arrived in Puerto Rico in 1493 it remained an overseas province of Spain until 1898 during the Spanish-American war and was then taken over by the United States. During the life time of the Island there have been multiple groups that have settled on the island for example the tainos were the indigenous people of Puerto Rico and had been there up to 1000 years before Christopher Columbus had arrived on the island. Once Christopher Columbus got there he brought the second group of settlers and they stayed there for some time so they could make goods that they needed. The third group to live on the island were the Americans while they got there the latest they took the island in order to get Spain out of there but also because, of their interests in developing a sugar market on the island. After around roughly four hundred years of colonial rule from the Spanish Empire Puerto Rico finally received it's independence from Spain. The history of the island has affected how the people of the island live and what they believe in as well. Although, Puerto Rico gained it's independence there are still aspects of Spaniard culture for example the buildings in the Old San Juan district have very similar styles to houses in Spain. The religion in Puerto Rico is mainly Catholic because of the impact the Spaniards had when they took over the island just like the main language of the island is Spanish as well. They also picked up many cuisines from Spain but the most notable is Arroz con Pollo it is native to Puerto Rico but has ties to the Spanish motherland. Although, the island was under colonial rule for four hundred years there were many byproducts of being colonized that the people of Puerto Rico have come to know and love.

  1. Good information, I would recommend adding one more picture and splitting up the big body of text to make it more visually appealing.
